VoIP over WLAN: a use case based on ST NomadikTM chipset
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper presents an application of DSP technology to an emerging service: Voice-over-IP in Wireless LAN networks. In this context, energy consumption is a key factor and DSP’s contribute to considerable savings compared to general purpose CPU. ST Nomadik TM application processor embeds an ARM core and DSP based accelerators for Multimedia processing. This System on Chip can be used in combination with low-power wireless peripherals to implement a VoIP application using Wireless LAN connectivity. The ARM core runs the signalling protocol and the main OS, whereas the audio DSP is responsible for voice encoding and decoding. The software interface to control Multimedia components complies with the OpenMAX Integration Layer API, recently standardized by the Khronos Group. This paper presents the overall architecture of the Nomadik System on Chip, discusses the characteristics of the VoIP-WLAN application and shows the software partitioning that has been prototyped.

Comparison of QoS Guarantee Techniques for VoIP over IEEE802.11 Wireless LAN
An emerging killer application for enterprise wireless LANs (WLANs) is voice over IP (VoIP) telephony, which promises to greatly improve the reachability and mobility of enterprise telephony service at low cost. None of the commercial IEEE 802.11 WLAN-based VoIP products can support more than ten G.729-quality voice conversations over a single IEEE 802.11b channel on real-world WLANs, even thou...
متن کاملEnergy Saving Strategies for Mobile Devices using Wake-up Signals
Voice-over-IP (VoIP) has rapidly gained popularity in the last years, especially on smartphones platforms. In fact, WLAN chip-sets are becoming more common on smartphones, allowing users to use VoIP services from their mobile devices. On the other hand, the excessive energy consumption of the WLAN chip-set, limits the widespread use of VoIP on mobile phones. As most of the energy is spent when ...
متن کاملDéploiement à grande échelle de la voix sur IP dans des environnements hétérogènes. (Large scale VoIP deployment over heterogeneous environments)
In this thesis, we focus on large scale Voice over IP (VoIP) deployment over heterogeneous Internet environments. We first present an overview of VoIP coding and transmission mechanisms. Then, we investigate performance limitations in the case of a large number of VoIP flows transported over wired Internet links between peer VoIP gateways. We address, in the first part of the thesis, the need t...
متن کاملVoIP over WLAN 802.11b simulations for infrastructure and ad-hoc networks
Voice IP (VoIP) over wireless local area network (WLAN) is a topic of great interest in the research arena. To investigate what are the performance limitations in establishing VoIP calls over WLAN networks we performed some simulations. We show in this paper these simulation results in ad-hoc and infrastructure WLAN networks, working under ideal and real conditions. Measures and graphs of packe...
متن کاملSupporting VoIP Services in IEEE 802.11e WLANs
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) over Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) is becoming popular thanks to its cost efficiency. However, it has been a challenge to provide good quality of VoIP services in WLANs, which is due mainly to (i) the nature of contention-based channel access of WLAN Medium Access Control (MAC); (ii) the presence of coexisting non-real-time data traffic; and (iii) the ti...
